What is Mistral AI: the app, the API and the open weights

What is Mistral AI? It is a French company that builds AI models, the programs behind chat apps, and sells them in three ways. This page shows which of the three you mean, who it suits, how it bills and who may see your data.

Read the title as one company. Mistral AI is a French lab, founded in Paris, that builds AI models and sells access to them. The figure shows one workshop with three shopfronts. Studio: the API for builders. Studio is for developers building products; if you only chat, skip this column. An API lets programs ask a service for an answer, with no screen. Studio bills per token, page or minute; a token is a small chunk of text. Help comes from the docs, and a firm can sign a contract that promises uptime. On Studio you can pick the EU region, so requests run on EU servers.
Vibe: the finished app. Vibe, formerly Le Chat, is the app for people and teams, on the web and on phones. It bills a monthly subscription, from a Free plan up to Enterprise. Pro costs $14.99 a month excluding taxes; EU readers pay VAT on top. On Free and Pro, Mistral trains on your chats by default until you switch it off; on Enterprise it does not. Open weights: run it yourself. Weights are the numbers a model learned in training, saved as files. Open weights means anyone may download those files, like a free download of a finished program. You get them from Hugging Face, a public site where companies share AI models, and run them on your own computers. Mistral bills nothing, sees nothing and gives no support.

On the Vibe Free and Pro plans, yes, by default. On Enterprise, no. To stop it, open admin.mistral.ai and go to Vibe > Privacy, then turn the training switch off. The API has its own separate switch, and open weights on your own machines send nothing to Mistral.
Where does Mistral process my data?
It depends on the product. On Studio you pick the EU or US region yourself; with no pick, requests go to a global address with no region promise. For Vibe chats, the sources behind the book name no region, so ask Mistral with its Data Processing Agreement. Open weights stay on your own machines.
Is the free Mistral app good enough for everyday use?
For drafting emails or reading invoices you rarely need the top model. Vibe Free gives limited messages, and Mistral does not publish the count.
