Qwen did not appear fully formed. It shipped in a sequence of visible steps: a beta in April 2023, a dedicated vision-language model (Qwen-VL) in August 2023, public access opening in September 2023, the Qwen2 generation in June 2024, the Qwen3 family launching in April 2025, and the current flagship, Qwen3.8-Max, shipping in August 2026. Figure 1.1 lays that sequence out on a single timeline, because the pace itself is part of the story: this is roughly three and a half years from beta to a 2.4-trillion-parameter open flagship, with several full model generations in between.
