n8n Made Crystal Clear · chapter 4: Expressions and Data Mapping
An expression resolved

The dashed line is the item lineage from chapter 2's anchor figure, now doing visible work: .item walks it backwards so each row gets its own ancestor.
Below: the paragraph from the book that builds this idea, then the diagram itself (Figure 4.1), and a recap. About a minute of reading.
Figure 4.1 traces one such query through a three node workflow. Notice that the middle node's output does not contain an email address at all. That is normal: an enrichment call returns what the API decided to return. The last node still needs the email, so it asks the trigger for it, and item linking makes sure item 1 gets item 1's address rather than everybody getting the first one.

Recap
- The idea: The dashed line is the item lineage from chapter 2's anchor figure, now doing visible work: .item walks it backwards so each row gets its own ancestor.
- The picture: Figure 4.1, from chapter 4 ("Expressions and Data Mapping") of n8n Made Crystal Clear.
- Go deeper: the chapter builds this step by step, with recipes and sources at the end.
This diagram is one of many in n8n Made Crystal Clear.
Every chapter opens with the gist, draws the hard ideas, and ends with recipes and sources.
